Nitish Kumar Resigns as Bihar CM, NDA to Pick New Leader Today

After decades in power, Nitish Kumar steps down; BJP and JDU leaders meet in Patna to decide Bihar’s next chief minister

Patna: In a major political development, Nitish Kumar on Tuesday resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Bihar after dissolving his Cabinet following its final meeting in Patna. His resignation marks the end of a long tenure that shaped the state’s political landscape for nearly two decades.

With his exit, attention has now shifted to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is set to announce the next chief minister later in the day. A crucial meeting of the BJP Legislature Party is scheduled, followed by a joint NDA meeting at the Bihar Legislative Assembly, where the new leader will be finalised.

Among the prominent names being discussed for the top post is Samrat Choudhary, who is widely seen as a frontrunner. Other leaders, including Nityanand Rai and Renu Devi, are also reportedly in contention. Senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan is expected to be present as a central observer during the proceedings.

Earlier this month, Nitish Kumar had already transitioned to national politics after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. He formally took oath as a Member of Parliament on April 11, following his resignation as an MLC in the Bihar Assembly in compliance with parliamentary rules.

Despite stepping down, leaders from the Janata Dal (United) have indicated that Nitish Kumar will continue to play an influential role in Bihar’s governance and policy direction. Party leaders подчеркнули that the upcoming government will carry forward his development agenda under NDA’s leadership.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new chief minister is expected to take place soon after the announcement, with indications that the new Cabinet may largely retain the existing structure, allowing for continuity in governance.

As Bihar awaits its next political chapter, Nitish Kumar’s resignation marks a significant transition, while the NDA prepares to usher in a new leadership for the state.
