Mayawati Backs UP Jobs Drive, Demands Action on Reservation and Teacher Recruitment

Lucknow, August 27, 2026; Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has welcomed the Uttar Pradesh government’s plan to provide employment to one lakh young people within the next six months, but questioned whether the announcement was influenced by the approaching Assembly elections.

In a statement posted on X, Mayawati described the proposed recruitment as a positive decision that came late. She, however, urged the state government to ensure that appointments are completed within the announced timeframe and that the selection process remains transparent and free of paper leaks, corruption and other irregularities.

The BSP chief also called attention to vacant posts reserved for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. She said the government should clarify when the backlog of reserved vacancies would be filled, as candidates from these communities have been waiting for action.

Mayawati also raised the unresolved dispute over the recruitment of 69,000 assistant teachers in the state. She highlighted the continuing demands of around 6,800 candidates from reserved categories, who have been seeking appointments amid the long-standing controversy over the selection process and implementation of reservation rules.

The BSP leader said the government should take a sympathetic approach towards the affected candidates and work towards providing them a concrete solution. The recruitment dispute has continued for several years, including after the Allahabad High Court directed authorities in 2024 to prepare a revised selection list.

Turning to school education, Mayawati said the government should take steps beyond recruitment if it genuinely wants to strengthen the state’s education system. She called for the reopening and proper functioning of government schools that, according to her, have been shut down across Uttar Pradesh.

She also urged authorities to strengthen initiatives concerning women’s safety, dignity and economic independence, arguing that broader protection against harassment, exploitation and violence should remain a priority.

Her remarks came shortly after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that appointment letters would be issued to one lakh youths within six months. The Chief Minister had also said that more than 9.30 lakh young people had received government employment during the past nine years.

Mayawati’s response therefore welcomed the employment initiative while pressing the Uttar Pradesh government to address reserved vacancies, the 69,000 teacher recruitment dispute, government school closures and women’s welfare alongside its latest jobs announcement.
