PM Modi urges youth to choose sports over screens
PM Modi calls on youngsters to step away from screens and embrace sports, highlighting their role in building resilience, healthy families and national pride.
The Impressive TimesNew Delhi, August 27, 2026; Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged young people to spend more time on sports and physical activities, stressing that a strong sporting culture can contribute to healthier families, society and the nation’s global standing.
Addressing athletes through the Khelo India Dialogue via video conference, Modi said sports should become an integral part of a student’s daily routine rather than remain limited to a co-curricular activity in schools.
The Prime Minister pointed to the growing dependence of youngsters on smartphones, computers and gaming consoles and encouraged them to adopt what he described as a “playgrounds over Playstations” mindset.
He said giving sports a regular place alongside academics would help identify and develop young sporting talent, while greater support from families could further strengthen India’s athletic ecosystem.
Modi also underlined the wider lessons that sports offer beyond competition. According to him, participation in sport develops resilience, teaches youngsters how to handle setbacks and encourages them to compete with determination.
He said sporting success also has an impact beyond individual athletes. Achievements by players can bring recognition to their families, educational institutions, districts and states, while contributing to India’s prestige internationally.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the benefits of sports should not be measured only by medals or victories, saying participation can help individuals and families grow while creating a stronger sporting identity for the country.
His remarks came as India continues to focus on expanding grassroots participation and creating a stronger pipeline of young athletes through initiatives such as Khelo India.
