Nepal Flood Crisis Puts UP Border Districts on Alert, States Open Helplines for Stranded Citizens

Lucknow, August 27, 2026; Uttar Pradesh has intensified surveillance along its Nepal border following severe flash floods in the neighbouring country, with authorities in Maharajganj, Kushinagar and other border areas instructed to remain prepared for any rise in downstream water levels.

The state Relief Commissioner’s office has established round-the-clock monitoring in Lucknow to assess developments and coordinate assistance. Residents seeking information about family members stranded or out of contact in Nepal can approach the state helpline at 1070.

Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said the helpline had received 10 calls from people concerned about relatives who had travelled to Nepal. He said there was no immediate threat to Uttar Pradesh’s border districts, but officials were closely tracking river levels, barrages and embankments.

Authorities are particularly monitoring the Gandak and Narayani rivers as well as the Valmiki Barrage. Officials said the current discharge of nearly 100,000 cusecs from the barrage remains within a manageable range and is not presently considered dangerous for the adjoining districts.

The administration has also been coordinating with officials and monitoring infrastructure on the Nepal side to identify any potential downstream impact. Officials said arrangements are in place to respond quickly if water levels rise.

The disaster has also triggered concern among Nepalese and Gorkha communities living in India. In Dehradun, Gorkhali Sudhar Sabha President Padam Thapa appealed to people to remain calm while expressing solidarity with those affected by the floods. He said community groups were preparing to support relief efforts and arrange emergency supplies, including shelter materials.

Thapa also urged authorities in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to closely monitor the situation because floodwaters could move downstream. He appealed to students and workers currently in Nepal to avoid unnecessary travel until official advisories indicate that conditions have improved.

Several other states have opened dedicated channels to help their citizens affected by the disaster. The Chhattisgarh government has asked people seeking assistance to contact its Disaster Management Helpline at 1070 or call +91-771-2223471.

The flood emergency in Nepal followed a sharp rise in the Bhote Koshi River, resulting in casualties, displacement and extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure. Nepal Embassy sources said 175 bodies had been recovered, while a large number of people were still unaccounted for.

Authorities said reports indicated that about 476 people from 28 countries had been reported missing, although the figures were still being verified as rescue and search operations continued.

With rescue teams working in affected areas, Indian authorities are maintaining close coordination and keeping border states prepared for possible downstream effects.
