Trump Suggests ‘Lake America’ Name for Lake Ontario as US-Canada Trade Tensions Escalate

Washington, DC, August 26, 2026; US President Donald Trump has sparked a fresh controversy with Canada after suggesting that Lake Ontario could be renamed “Lake America”, tying the idea to strained trade relations with the neighbouring country.

Trump raised the proposal in a post on his Truth Social platform, arguing that the United States may no longer conduct significant business with Ontario. His remarks add another layer to already tense economic relations between Washington and Ottawa.

Lake Ontario is one of North America‘s five Great Lakes and lies along the international boundary between Canada’s Ontario province and New York state. The lake is an important part of the region’s trade, transportation and economic network.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed Trump’s renaming suggestion, describing it as political rhetoric. Ford pointed to Ontario’s extensive commercial ties with the United States and said the province remains a major trading partner for several American states.

“If Ontario was just standalone, it would be the third-largest trading partner in the world,” Ford said, highlighting the scale of economic activity between Ontario and the US.

The latest dispute also comes amid disagreement over language-related trade issues involving Quebec. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had earlier alleged that American negotiators raised concerns about measures designed to protect the French language in Quebec.

US trade officials have criticised Canadian regulations that require streaming services to provide greater visibility to French-language programming in Quebec, considering such requirements a potential barrier to trade.

Trump rejected any suggestion that Washington’s trade position was aimed at restricting the use of French in Canada. He said he would not seek to interfere with Canadians speaking French and accused Canada’s leadership of misrepresenting the issue for political purposes.

Trump also sought to distance himself from any hostility toward Quebec’s French-speaking population, declaring his support for French Canadians.

The dispute highlights the broader tensions surrounding US-Canada trade negotiations, with economic policies, regional interests and Canada’s language protections becoming increasingly intertwined in the political exchange between the two countries.
