PM Modi Calls Skill Training Institutions as Important as IITs and IIMs, Urges Youth to Upgrade Skills

Interacting with Team India representatives after WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, PM stresses practical skills, industry readiness and making India a global hub for skilled professionals

New Delhi, October 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday interacted with representatives of Team India who participated in the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, congratulating them for representing the country on the international stage and emphasising the growing importance of practical and vocational skills.

During the interaction at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the participants shared their experiences of competing internationally and adapting to new tools, software, technical systems and work processes. They also discussed how government initiatives in skill development are helping young people build professional capabilities.

Congratulating the participants, Modi encouraged them to become ambassadors of skill development and stressed that practical skills are as important as academic degrees.

PM stresses continuous learning and skill upgradation

The Prime Minister said rapid technological advancements require young people to continuously acquire new skills, upgrade their existing capabilities and adapt to emerging technologies.

He urged participants to align their expertise with the requirements of international markets and contribute suggestions to improve India’s skill training ecosystem. Modi also emphasised coordinated efforts by young people, the government and training institutions to establish India as a global hub for skilled human resources.

Highlighting the importance of specialised training, Modi said skill development institutions were no less important than the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

He underlined the objective behind establishing a separate Ministry of Skill Development and encouraged the participants to share their experiences and recommendations with the government to strengthen the country’s vocational training system.

India secures 10th position at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

The WorldSkills Competition, regarded as a leading international platform for vocational and technical skills, brings together young professionals from participating countries and regions to demonstrate their expertise across various disciplines.

The 48th edition, WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, was held from September 22 to 27 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai.

India secured 10th position, winning six Silver Medals and 20 Medals for Excellence. The country fielded its largest-ever contingent of 70 competitors across 63 skills.

The participants’ experiences highlighted the importance of adapting to evolving technologies and international workplace standards, reinforcing the need to strengthen India’s skill development infrastructure.

The interaction was also attended by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, along with senior government officials.
