Hyderabad, June 27, 2026: US President Donald Trump has expressed gratitude to India after Telangana renamed a road near the United States Consulate in Hyderabad as “Donald Trump Avenue”, making him the first American president to receive such an honour in the country.

Trump acknowledged the gesture in a public statement, sharing an image from the ceremonial unveiling of the new road plaque. He thanked India for the recognition and described the honour as a historic first for a US president.

The renaming ceremony was held during the “Freedom 250” celebrations in Hyderabad, marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence. The event brought together senior government officials, diplomats, industry representatives and leaders from technology, aerospace and defence sectors.

The plaque was unveiled by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and US Consul General in Hyderabad Laura Williams were also present at the event.

Officials said the decision reflects Hyderabad’s expanding role in strengthening India-US relations, particularly in areas such as technology, innovation, investment and strategic cooperation. The city has emerged as a major centre for global companies and international partnerships.

Speaking at the event, the US Ambassador highlighted Hyderabad’s importance in the bilateral relationship, pointing to the city’s growth in sectors including information technology, aerospace and defence. He noted that the region represents the momentum of increasing cooperation between the two nations.

The Telangana government stated that the special designation of the road is part of a broader initiative to recognise globally influential personalities and organisations while highlighting the state’s international outlook.

The move was first proposed by the state government as part of efforts to rename prominent roads connected with global figures and institutions. Authorities said the initiative aims to project Telangana as a destination for innovation-driven growth and international collaboration.

Along with Donald Trump Avenue, the state government has also announced plans to recognise other prominent names. An upcoming greenfield radial road is proposed to be named after industrialist Ratan Tata, while a road near Google’s upcoming campus in Hyderabad’s Financial District is set to receive the name “Google Street”.

The road renaming initiative comes at a time when Hyderabad continues to strengthen its position as a hub for global investment and technological advancement. The city’s growing presence in international business networks has made it an important link in India’s economic engagement with the world.

The development has also drawn attention as a symbolic gesture highlighting diplomatic and economic ties between India and the United States. Beyond the ceremonial significance, it reflects the increasing importance of cities like Hyderabad in shaping global partnerships.
