Over 60 Lakh Devotees Take Sacred Dip on Paush Purnima, Marking the Grand Beginning of Maha Kumbh 2025

Prayagraj, January 13, 2025: Prayagraj witnessed a mesmerizing sight as lakhs of devotees gathered at the revered confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Paush Purnima. Marking the first Snan Parv (bathing festival) of Maha Kumbh 2025, the event drew pilgrims from all corners of the country. According to preliminary estimates, approximately 60 lakh devotees bathed at various ghats and the Sangam till 9:30 am.

The air resonated with chants of “Har Har Gange” and “Jai Shri Ram” as devotees, including children, women, and the elderly, arrived at the Sangam banks from midnight, braving the winter chill. Popular ghats like Sangam Nose, Airavat Ghat, and VIP Ghat saw significant footfall as pilgrims performed the sacred ritual.

Younger devotees enthusiastically captured the vibrant atmosphere on their phones, sharing photos and videos widely on social media, spreading the spiritual fervor of Maha Kumbh to a global audience.

The event showcased an exceptional enthusiasm among the youth for Sanatan culture and spirituality. Devotees of all ages actively participated in Sangam Snan and Daan (charity). After the sacred dip, they performed rituals and offerings, seeking spiritual blessings.

Under the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, stringent security measures were implemented. The Integrated Command and Control Center monitored the venue closely, with senior police officials overseeing operations. Additional police forces ensured smooth crowd management throughout the night and early morning hours.

Photos and videos of the grand festival quickly went viral, with devotees expressing pride in their cultural heritage. The gathering exemplified faith, devotion, and unity, creating a spectacle reminiscent of the spiritual grandeur associated with Maha Kumbh.

The massive turnout marked a global confluence of spirituality and human connection. Pilgrims from across the country and the world came not just for prayers and meditation but also to experience the unparalleled cultural richness of Maha Kumbh.

Kalpvasis, known for their austere lifestyle during the Kumbh period, began their 45-day spiritual retreat, taking a holy dip and adhering to vows of celibacy, simplicity, and devotion.

The coincidence of Paush Purnima falling on a Monday, considered auspicious for worshiping Lord Shiva, added to the spiritual significance of the day. Pilgrims from states like Bihar, Haryana, Bengal, Odisha, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Punjab joined in large numbers.

The global appeal of Maha Kumbh was evident, with international pilgrims and spiritual seekers also participating. Visitors from South Korea, Japan, Europe, and America were seen capturing the vibrant festivities. Christina, a tourist from Spain, called the event a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Market areas near Sangam Mela buzzed with activity as vendors sold puja items, prasad, and tilak materials. Retailers noted a higher influx of pilgrims compared to the 2019 Kumbh Mela, making this year’s Maha Kumbh an extraordinary celebration of faith and culture.
