“I will not resign” says Mamata Banerjee, calls election outcome a “murder of democracy”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee says she does not accept defeat, alleges misuse of institutions, calls ECI "Election Commission of BJP"

Kolkata, May 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly refused to resign following the recent election results, stating that she does not consider the outcome a true defeat. Speaking to party workers and supporters, she claimed that the situation reflects a “murder of democracy” and raised serious concerns about the fairness of the electoral process.

Banerjee said she is not fighting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone, but what she described as a larger system working against her party. According to her, democratic institutions are being influenced in a way that does not allow free and fair political competition. She specifically questioned the role of the Election Commission, suggesting that it has not acted independently and has instead shown bias in favour of the ruling party at the Centre.

Her remarks came shortly after the announcement of results, which triggered strong political reactions across the state. While opposition leaders have accepted the outcome, Banerjee’s comments indicate continued disagreement over the legitimacy of the process.

She further said that democracy in the country is under pressure and that opposition voices are being weakened. Without directly naming all institutions, she hinted that multiple systems are working in coordination, which, according to her, affects the fairness of elections. She also urged her supporters to remain calm but alert, stating that the fight is not over and that her party will continue to raise its voice against what she called injustice.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, has strongly rejected these allegations. Party leaders have maintained that the elections were conducted in a transparent and fair manner under the supervision of constitutional authorities. They said that the mandate reflects the will of the people and that such statements are an attempt to mislead the public and question democratic institutions without evidence.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has not issued a detailed response to her remarks but has repeatedly stated in past instances that it functions independently and follows all constitutional guidelines during elections. Officials have also emphasized that the entire electoral process is monitored strictly to ensure fairness and transparency.

The situation has added to the already tense political atmosphere in West Bengal. Supporters of both sides have engaged in heated discussions on social media and in public spaces, with strong opinions being expressed over the credibility of the election process. Political analysts say that such statements could further deepen the divide between ruling and opposition parties in the coming days.

Despite the controversy, Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that she will continue to lead her party and raise concerns over what she believes are irregularities. She reaffirmed her commitment to democratic values but insisted that these values must be protected in practice, not just in principle.

As the political situation develops, attention now shifts to how both the state and central leadership respond to these allegations and whether any formal discussions or investigations follow. For now, the debate over the election outcome and its interpretation continues to dominate the political landscape in West Bengal.
