India and Japan Reinforce Strategic Health Alliance as JP Nadda Leads High Level Bilateral Healthcare Dialogue

Third joint healthcare committee meeting focuses on digital health, medical innovation, supply chains, and stronger institutional partnerships

New Delhi, May 5, 2026: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Tuesday co chaired the third India Japan Joint Committee Meeting on Healthcare in New Delhi, signaling renewed momentum in bilateral cooperation aimed at strengthening healthcare systems, advancing innovation, and expanding strategic collaboration between the two nations.

Held at Bharat Mandapam, the high level meeting was jointly led by Nadda and Japan’s Minister in charge of Healthcare Policy, Kimi Onoda. The discussions reflected the growing importance of the India Japan health partnership under the existing Memorandum of Cooperation on Healthcare and Wellness.

Addressing the gathering, Nadda emphasized that India and Japan share a long standing strategic relationship rooted in mutual trust, innovation, and inclusive development. He noted that the meeting provided a vital platform to deepen cooperation in healthcare accessibility, technological advancement, and resilient public health systems.

Key discussions covered critical sectors such as prevention and management of non communicable diseases, cancer screening, digital health ecosystems, pharmaceutical and medical device supply chain resilience, and healthcare workforce development. India highlighted its progress under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and its expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity, while Japan shared expertise in advanced digitalization, AI powered healthcare technologies, and institutional partnerships.

The dialogue also explored collaboration in strengthening medical product accessibility, promoting joint research initiatives, and facilitating healthcare personnel exchanges between the two countries. Both sides underscored the need for sustainable and inclusive health systems capable of addressing future public health challenges.

Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava described the committee as a cornerstone for expanding bilateral understanding and ensuring constructive long term cooperation. Japanese representatives reiterated their commitment to innovation driven partnerships in medical research, healthcare delivery, and advanced treatment systems.

In his concluding remarks, Nadda stated that the meeting had injected fresh energy into India Japan healthcare relations and laid a clear roadmap for future collaboration across multiple strategic areas.
