Japanese artist Mari Ito debuts in India with bold, thought-provoking exhibition

‘Origin of Desire’ at Bikaner House explores identity, rebellion and the fusion of tradition with contemporary art

New Delhi- Japanese contemporary artist Mari Ito has opened her first solo exhibition in India, offering audiences a striking blend of traditional techniques and modern themes at Bikaner House.

Titled Origin of Desire, the exhibition brings together a series of recent paintings and a large-scale installation that reflects on themes of identity, resistance, and the human body. The show marks Ito’s debut in the Indian art scene and presents works created between 2024 and the present.

Florecer Contra La Bomba (or, Flourish Against the Bombs).

Ito’s practice is rooted in Nihonga, a classical Japanese painting method that uses mineral pigments, sumi ink, and natural binders on delicate washi paper or silk. Known for its subtle textures and luminous quality, the technique contrasts sharply with modern digital or oil-based art forms.

Having lived in Barcelona since 2006, Ito’s work reflects a fusion of Japanese discipline and Mediterranean vibrancy. Her canvases are filled with organic, almost surreal botanical forms that symbolise growth, desire, and transformation.

Curator Wribhu Borphukon notes that Ito’s art challenges conventional narratives by presenting the body as a space of resistance and imagination. Her compositions often feature blooming, expanding forms that blur the boundaries between human and nature, suggesting a fluid and evolving identity.

A highlight of the exhibition is her installation Flowers Blooming in Defiance of the Bombs, previously showcased in Spain and now reimagined for the Indian setting. The piece reflects resilience and renewal, aligning with the broader themes of the exhibition.

Ito’s work also engages with feminist ideas, pushing back against traditional roles historically assigned to women in Japanese society. By combining an age-old technique with contemporary subject matter, she creates a dialogue between past and present, discipline and freedom.

The exhibition is supported by Galerie Geek Art, which aims to bring Asian contemporary artists into conversation with Indian audiences. The gallery plans to expand its initiatives by showcasing more artists from across Asia in the future.

With Origin of Desire, Ito not only introduces her unique artistic voice to India but also invites viewers to rethink notions of tradition, creativity, and personal expression in a rapidly evolving world.
