Constitution is Independent India’s Gita”: Union Minister Manohar Lal

Modi Government Honors Dr. Ambedkar’s Legacy; Congress Accused of Neglecting Contribution

Chandigarh , 12-01-2025– Union Minister for Energy, Housing, and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, while addressing the Constitution Glory Ceremony on National Youth Day at MD University, Rohtak, described the Constitution as the “Gita” of Independent India. He emphasized that just as the Gita guides life, the Constitution is crucial for guiding the nation’s progress, respecting all citizens, societies, religions, and communities. Minister Manohar Lal praised Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for his significant contribution to India’s construction and development, but criticized Congress for ignoring Ambedkar’s legacy. He pointed out that the Modi government has given Dr. Ambedkar the honor he deserves, including the construction of memorials at significant sites linked to his life and studies, such as the London University where Ambedkar studied. The Union Minister highlighted that the Constitution has undergone 106 amendments since its inception—75 amendments during Congress rule, often to suit their political interests, and 22 amendments under BJP governance, aimed at societal welfare. Notable amendments include the BC Commission, the Tribal Commission, 33% reservation for women, filling up of backlogs, and the 10% EWS reservation. Manohar Lal accused Congress of amending the Constitution for selfish purposes, citing the Emergency and President’s rule for political gain.

He criticized their divisive reservation policies, which go against the Constitution’s goal of uplifting marginalized communities. The Minister also claimed Congress obstructed Dr. Ambedkar’s path to Parliament, despite strong support from leaders like Yogendra Nath Mandal, and noted that Ambedkar’s appointment as Chairman of the Constitution Assembly was due to nationwide backing. In his speech, Manohar Lal encouraged the youth to draw inspiration from Swami Vivekananda and Dr. Ambedkar, who dedicated their lives to the welfare of society and the country’s development. He urged the youth to continue their work towards shaping a better nation, emphasizing that both leaders worked for the betterment of all, irrespective of caste or religion. The ceremony was attended by retired IAS officer Dilip Kumar, former minister Manish Grover, and was chaired by MDU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajbir Singh. Minister Manohar Lal also highlighted how the Congress had opposed the commemoration of Constitution Day on November 26, a tradition initiated by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, calling it irrelevant in light of Republic Day celebrations. This opposition, he said, reflected Congress’s disregard for the Constitution’s significance.
Finally, the Minister pointed out that the Congress’s claims of upholding the Constitution in election campaigns are mere political tactics. During the 2019 elections, Congress falsely claimed that if the BJP won 400 seats, Prime Minister Modi would abolish the Constitution. He stressed the need for public awareness to counter such misinformation and ensure the Constitution’s honor is upheld.
