Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Pays Tribute to Former Speaker G. S. Dhillon on Birth Anniversary

New Delhi, August 6:

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday honoured former Lok Sabha Speaker Dr. Gurdial Singh (G. S.) Dhillon by offering floral tributes at his portrait in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

Several dignitaries joined the commemorative ceremony, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Members of Parliament, former MPs, Lok Sabha Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh and senior officials, who also paid their respects to the veteran parliamentarian.

Remembered as a respected freedom fighter, parliamentarian and journalist, Dr. Dhillon played an active role in India‘s Independence movement as well as the Kisan Movement before entering journalism in the post-Independence era. As Chief Editor of the Urdu daily Sher-e-Bharat and Managing Director of National Sikh Newspapers Ltd., he worked to promote communal harmony, national integration and social cohesion.

Dr. Dhillon entered Parliament after being elected from the Taran Taran constituency in the 1967 general elections. He was unanimously chosen as the Speaker of the Fourth Lok Sabha in August 1969 and later continued in the same role during the Fifth Lok Sabha from March 1971. His tenure as Speaker lasted until December 1975 and is remembered for its contribution to strengthening parliamentary traditions.

His portrait, created by noted artist Samir Das, was unveiled by former President Pranab Mukherjee on February 10, 2014. The portrait is permanently displayed in the Outer Lobby of Samvidhan Sadan, serving as a tribute to his legacy in India’s parliamentary democracy.
