Paramaribo, May 6, 2026: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his first official visit to Suriname, underscored the enduring cultural and historical relationship between India and Suriname, declaring that India views Suriname not merely as a diplomatic partner but as part of its extended global family.

Addressing members of the Indian diaspora and Surinamese leadership, Jaishankar emphasized the profound civilizational connection rooted in shared ancestry, cultural traditions, and generations of people to people ties dating back to the arrival of Indian indentured workers in Suriname more than a century ago.

He noted that the relationship between the two countries extends far beyond conventional diplomacy, reflecting emotional, historical, and societal bonds that continue to shape bilateral engagement. His remarks reinforced India’s broader outreach strategy toward nations with significant Indian origin communities and historical links.
