Lucknow: Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, has called on the Supreme Court of India to step in and examine the electoral process followed in West Bengal. He expressed apprehension over the credibility of the recently concluded Assembly elections and demanded greater transparency in vote counting.
Addressing the media in Lucknow on Wednesday, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister questioned why the counting of votes cannot be broadcast publicly, drawing a comparison with live-streamed court hearings. He suggested that making such processes visible to citizens would enhance trust in the electoral system.
Yadav also cautioned that the issues observed in Bengal could extend to Uttar Pradesh, where Assembly elections are scheduled next year. According to him, ensuring fairness now is essential to prevent similar controversies in future polls.
The Samajwadi Party leader emphasized that democratic institutions must maintain complete transparency, particularly during critical stages like vote counting, to uphold public confidence. His remarks come amid ongoing political debates surrounding the conduct of elections and the role of monitoring bodies in safeguarding democratic processes.
