UP CM Yogi Adityanath launches Comprehensive Road Safety Awareness Drive

Lucknow, January 1: On the first day of the New Year, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a meeting of the UP State Road Safety Council, issuing key directives aimed at improving road safety across the state. He announced a road safety awareness drive to be held in schools and colleges from January 6 to 10, 2024, urging all departments to ensure effective implementation. He emphasized that District Road Safety Committees, led by District Magistrates, must convene meetings by January 5 to plan and prioritize safety measures.

Highlighting the alarming statistic of 25,000–26,000 deaths due to road accidents annually, the Chief Minister called it a significant loss to both the state and the nation. He attributed many of these incidents to a lack of awareness and urged officials to identify accident-prone areas, address underlying causes, and enforce traffic rules rigorously. He also stressed the need for monthly road safety meetings at the district level, chaired by District Magistrates and attended by key officials, including the Superintendent of Police, RTO, and Chief Medical Officer.

CM Adityanath directed the deployment of additional PRD personnel and Home Guards to improve traffic management, especially during the Mahakumbh. He called for strict action against overloading and the immediate removal of parked loaded vehicles on highways using cranes. He also urged campaigns promoting the use of helmets and seat belts while proposing the integration of FASTag to track and revoke licenses of vehicles with repeated violations.

The Chief Minister underlined the importance of public cooperation in assisting accident victims within the critical golden hour, encouraging bystanders to transport the injured to nearby hospitals. He also proposed the establishment of road safety parks in every district and the involvement of students in awareness activities such as dramas, essay writing, and seminars on traffic rules.

To further enhance safety, the Chief Minister directed a ban on modified silencers and horns in bikes to reduce noise pollution. He also highlighted the need for proper registration and route allocation for illegally operated buses to improve public convenience. Additionally, vending zones are to be designated in all localities to support hawkers while eliminating illegal roadside stands.

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on traffic violations, calling for collaboration among all departments, including transport, public works, and law enforcement. Through these measures, the Uttar Pradesh government aims to reduce road accidents, save lives, and instill a culture of responsibility and safety among citizens.
