A Gift of Life Amid Tragedy

Army officer’s wife’s organ donation saves 14-year-old boy with end-stage heart failure

New Delhi- A 14-year-old boy suffering from end-stage heart failure has been given a new lease of life after the family of a 41-year-old woman, wife of a serving Indian Army officer, decided to donate her organs following her brain death at a military hospital in Panchkula. The woman had suffered a brain haemorrhage and was declared brain dead at Command Hospital, Chandimandir, after which her husband and two daughters consented to organ donation, transforming their personal loss into hope for others.

Her heart was allocated to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, where a specialised medical team coordinated a time-sensitive transplant procedure. Doctors travelled to Chandigarh via a chartered flight to retrieve the organ, ensuring it was transported within the critical time window. Authorities facilitated a smooth transfer by creating a green corridor, allowing the heart to reach the hospital in just about 20 minutes.

The transplant surgery was completed successfully, and the teenager—who had been battling deteriorating health for over a year—was shifted to the ICU, where he remains stable under close observation. Medical experts said a transplant was the only viable option for his survival, given his worsening condition and repeated hospitalisations.

Hospital officials highlighted that the family’s decision not only saved one life but could benefit several others through organ donation, underlining the critical importance of awareness and timely consent in such cases.
