Navi Mumbai- In a major push to transform India’s higher education landscape, City and Industrial Development Corporation has finalised a 100-hectare site at Karanjade in Panvel to develop the country’s first integrated “Educity” near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The ambitious project aims to bring top global universities under one roof, creating a world-class academic and research ecosystem.
Planned as a comprehensive education township, the proposed Educity will include international university campuses, innovation hubs, research centres, student housing, and supporting infrastructure within a single, well-designed zone. Officials said the initiative is part of a larger development blueprint around the airport region, which also envisions specialised zones like Medicity and Aerocity.
Authorities highlighted the strategic advantage of the location, noting that the site lies within a few kilometres of the airport and is well connected to major transport corridors. The area’s relatively flat terrain and readiness for infrastructure development have further strengthened its selection over earlier proposed locations.
Significant groundwork has already been completed, with most of the land acquisition nearing completion and preparatory work such as land levelling and site development underway. Investments have also been earmarked for road connectivity and internal infrastructure to accelerate execution.
The project is expected to host campuses of leading global institutions, allowing students in India to access international education at a comparatively lower cost. Academic programmes are likely to focus on emerging sectors such as aviation, logistics, technology, healthcare, and design, aligning with future industry demands.
Officials indicated that multiple foreign universities have already shown strong interest, with some reaching advanced stages of agreement. The model will allow these institutions to maintain academic autonomy while operating within India, enabling students to earn globally recognised degrees without going abroad.
Beyond academics, the Educity is expected to drive economic growth in the surrounding region by generating employment and boosting demand for housing, transport, retail, and services. The development is also likely to position Navi Mumbai as a key international education hub in the coming years.
