IIT Ropar Faculty Sent on Leave After PhD Scholar Levels Assault Allegations

Institute launches internal probe, assures safety and support to complainant

Ropar- Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has placed an assistant professor on compulsory leave after a doctoral student accused him of physical assault and harassment, prompting immediate action by the institute. According to officials, the complaint was addressed within 24 hours, with the Internal Complaints Committee initiating proceedings and interim safeguards put in place to protect the student’s academic progress and well-being.

The PhD scholar, who is in her first year, alleged through social media that her supervisor physically attacked her after she refused to accompany him on an overseas trip linked to research work. She further claimed that she was threatened with expulsion from her programme and later denied access to laboratory facilities. The student also alleged that unauthorised surveillance cameras had been installed in the lab, which she believes were intended to create misleading evidence against her.

In its official statement, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar said it has extended medical and counselling support to the complainant and has informed local police authorities, adding that it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The institute reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful campus environment while emphasising that due process will be followed as the inquiry continues. Officials have urged the public to respect the privacy of those involved as further findings are awaited.
