NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Kota Hostel, CCTV Confirms Stress-Linked Death: Police

Student from Uttarakhand allegedly jumped from sixth floor a day before exam; authorities issue mental health guidelines

Kota The death of a NEET aspirant from Uttarakhand in Kota will be treated as a case of suicide after police examined CCTV footage and recovered a note indicating stress, officials said on Sunday. The student, identified as Dixit Prasad from Almora, allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of a hostel building in Landmark City on Saturday, just a day before his scheduled pre-medical test.

According to police, Prasad had been preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for the past two years while staying in a fourth-floor room of the hostel. Initial reports had suggested the possibility of an accidental fall, but further investigation, including CCTV analysis and a suicide note, confirmed that he had climbed to the sixth floor before jumping.

Circle Inspector Devesh Bhardwaj from Kunhadi police station said the investigation revealed that the student was under severe stress and depression, fearing he might not clear the exam. His parents reached Kota on Sunday morning, after which the body was handed over to them following a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have registered a case to probe all aspects of the incident. In response to the tragedy, the Kota administration has issued fresh guidelines to coaching institutes and hostels, directing them to prioritise students’ mental health. Institutions have been asked to identify early signs of stress, depression, or anxiety and ensure timely counselling and emotional support.

Additionally, multiple helplines have been activated to assist students dealing with mental health issues, safety concerns, or emotional distress, as part of efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
