Delhi Fire Tragedy: PM Modi Announces ₹2 Lakh Compensation After 9 Killed in Vivek Vihar Blaze

Prime Minister expresses grief over Shahdara incident; relief announced for victims’ families and injured

New Delhi- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives in a devastating fire incident in Vivek Vihar, which claimed nine lives on Sunday. He announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.

The tragic incident took place in a four-storey residential building in Delhi’s Shahdara district during the early hours of Sunday. According to officials, the Delhi Fire Services received a call about the blaze around 3:47 am, following which multiple teams were rushed to the spot. By 5 am, as many as 14 fire tenders had been deployed to control the fire.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajendra Prasad Meena stated that the structure of the building, with flats on both the front and rear sides, made firefighting operations particularly challenging. Search operations were initiated only after the fire was completely brought under control later in the morning.

Among the victims was a 1.5-year-old toddler, highlighting the severity of the tragedy. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, while rescue and relief efforts remain ongoing.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister described the incident as “extremely distressing” and extended prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.
