Union Jal Shakti Minister Launches Punah Bharan App for Scientific Groundwater Recharge Planning

The BISAG-N-developed platform identifies potential artificial groundwater recharge zones within a 3-km radius and offers GIS-based planning tools for sustainable water management.

New Delhi- The Union Minister of Jal Shakti has launched the Punah Bharan mobile application to support scientific planning for groundwater recharge and promote sustainable water resource management across the country.

Developed by BISAG-N in collaboration with the National Water Mission (NWM) under the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, the application uses geospatial technology to help identify suitable locations for artificial groundwater recharge.

The app enables users to locate potential groundwater recharge zones within a radius of up to three kilometres and explore appropriate recharge structures according to local geographical conditions.

The Punah Bharan platform uses geospatial datasets, including rainfall patterns, groundwater levels, groundwater yield, land slope and drainage networks, to identify areas with potential for groundwater recharge. This information can help users assess local conditions and plan suitable interventions for improving groundwater availability.

Alongside the mobile application, the associated web portal provides access to village-level Artificial Recharge Structure (ARS) zonation maps, Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and thematic data layers. These resources are intended to support evidence-based planning and informed decision-making for groundwater management.

The initiative aims to strengthen the use of scientific data in identifying artificial recharge sites and selecting suitable structures based on local requirements. By making geospatial information accessible through a mobile application and web portal, the platform can support more systematic groundwater recharge planning.

Punah Bharan represents an effort to integrate digital mapping and scientific assessment into water conservation initiatives, helping stakeholders identify potential recharge areas and plan interventions suited to local geographical conditions.

The launch aligns with the broader objective of improving groundwater management through technology-driven planning and sustainable use of water resources.
