‘I Myself Am a Victim’: Vinesh Phogat Confirms Role in Harassment Case Against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

Wrestler breaks silence ahead of comeback, raises safety concerns over upcoming tournament in Gonda

New Delhi- Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Sunday publicly confirmed that she is among the six women who filed sexual harassment complaints against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Sharing a video on social media, Phogat said she chose to speak out despite the case still being under process.

“I did not want to speak while the case is still pending, but today, due to certain circumstances, I want to tell you that I myself am one of those six victims, and our testimonies are still ongoing,” she said.

Her statement comes just days before her return to competitive wrestling at the National Open Ranking Tournament scheduled from May 10 to 12 in Gonda. The tournament will mark her first appearance since the Paris Olympics 2024 and her debut in the 57kg category, also serving as a key step towards qualification for the 2026 Asian Games.

Phogat, who was a prominent face of the 2023 wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar, expressed serious concerns about competing in Gonda, citing safety risks and mental pressure due to the alleged influence of Singh in the region. She said that competing in an environment where many people are connected to him could impact her performance and well-being.

She also questioned the lack of action against Singh, referring to his public statements and continued influence. “Even today, he claims to run the federation, but no action is taken,” she said, adding that any untoward incident during the competition would raise serious accountability concerns.

Clarifying her stance, Phogat said she is not seeking any special treatment but wants a fair sporting environment where outcomes are decided purely on merit and hard work.

One of India’s most decorated wrestlers, Phogat has previously won gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. After announcing her retirement following the Paris Olympics setback, she reversed her decision later in 2025 and is now aiming for a return with a focus on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
