Marcus Stoinis Shocks the Cricket World with Surprise Retirement Decision Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025

Melbourne, Feb 6, 2025: Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, just days before the highly anticipated Champions Trophy 2025. The World Cup-winning squad member made the unexpected decision to retire from ODIs, although he will remain available for national duty in the T20I format.

Stoinis had been named in Australia’s preliminary 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, which is set to take place in Pakistan and the UAE later this month. However, he will be replaced in the final squad, which will be announced by February 12, according to a Cricket Australia statement.

At 35 years old, Stoinis has been playing for the Durban Super Giants in the ongoing South African T20 franchise competition, where he recently sustained a mild hamstring injury while bowling. Despite this setback, the allrounder’s decision to retire from ODIs was driven by his desire to focus on the T20 format for both Australia and franchise cricket for the remaining years of his career.

Reflecting on his ODI journey, Stoinis expressed his gratitude: “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m thankful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.”

Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, praised Stoinis for his contribution to the team over nearly a decade. “Stoin has been a vital part of our ODI setup for the past ten years. He’s not only been an invaluable player but also a fantastic leader and an incredibly popular figure within the group,” McDonald said. “He deserves congratulations for all he has achieved in his ODI career.”

Stoinis’ impact was also felt in 2019 when he was named the One-Day Player of the Year at the Australian Cricket Awards.
