New Delhi : The deportation of Indian nationals from the United States has triggered intense protests in both Houses of Parliament today, with opposition parties demanding an immediate discussion on the matter. The situation grew heated as lawmakers from various opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, TMC, and Samajwadi Party, voiced their dissatisfaction over the issue. Their calls for a discussion on the deportation of Indian citizens were met with resistance from the government, leading to disruptions in proceedings.
In the Lok Sabha, the House reassembled at noon after a brief adjournment. As soon as the session resumed, opposition members started sloganeering and marched to the well of the House, raising their concerns over the deportation issue. They demanded an urgent discussion on the matter, citing the distress faced by Indian nationals being deported. Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Om Birla to allow the House to function, the protests continued unabated. The Speaker eventually adjourned the House until 2 PM to bring the situation under control.
Earlier, opposition parties had attempted to bring up the issue through an adjournment motion, but Speaker Birla disallowed the motion, stating that the matter involved a foreign nation and urging members to allow the House to conduct its normal business. However, the opposition parties remained adamant, continuing their protest and disrupting the proceedings. As the protests escalated, the Speaker was left with no choice but to adjourn the House temporarily.
The Rajya Sabha also witnessed similar disruptions. When the Upper House convened this morning, opposition members immediately raised the issue, demanding a debate on the deportation of Indian nationals. The protests intensified, and amidst the commotion, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the Rajya Sabha until noon. Upon reconvening, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar informed the House that External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar would address the issue by making a statement in the Rajya Sabha at 2 PM.
The government’s decision to allow Dr. Jaishankar to speak on the issue was seen as a move to calm the growing unrest in both Houses. The opposition, however, continued to express frustration over the handling of the issue, insisting that it warranted a full debate. The deportation of Indian nationals from the U.S. has thus become a flashpoint, leading to a dramatic confrontation between the government and opposition in Parliament.
As Parliament proceedings were repeatedly adjourned, all eyes will now be on Dr. Jaishankar’s statement, which is expected to shed light on the government’s position and the steps being taken to address the concerns of the affected individuals.
