Shashi Tharoor Highlights Onam Celebration with Differently-Abled Children in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, August 26, 2026; Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday took part in an Onam programme organised by the Snehasandram Charitable Trust in Thiruvananthapuram, describing the occasion as one of the most significant moments of his Onam visit.

The trust was established by mothers of children with disabilities and operates with support from the public. It works with around 200 children with varying degrees of disabilities and focuses on providing them opportunities to develop their abilities and showcase their talents.

During the programme, Tharoor inaugurated the gathering and addressed those present. A child associated with the trust also portrayed the legendary King Mahabali as part of the Onam celebrations.

Extending his greetings on Thiruvonam, Tharoor wished people happiness, prosperity, peace and love throughout the year.

On the occasion, Congress leaders also conveyed their Onam wishes. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V D Satheesan emphasised the festival’s message of harmony, equality and unity, urging people to rise above caste and religious divisions.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also greeted people and highlighted Onam’s cultural significance, describing the festival as a celebration of Kerala’s heritage and the values of inclusiveness and togetherness.

Onam is Kerala’s prominent harvest festival and is traditionally associated with the return of King Mahabali. The ten-day festivities reach their peak on Thiruvonam, when families come together for prayers, cultural activities and the traditional Onasadya feast.

Homes and public spaces across Kerala are decorated with colourful Pookkalam, while people wear new clothes and participate in various traditional celebrations marking the spirit of the festival.
