Kolkata, August 15, 2026; West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening girls’ education and expanding financial support for students across the state.
Addressing the initiatives, the Chief Minister said the government was committed to ensuring that girls do not have to discontinue their education because of financial difficulties. He highlighted women’s education and empowerment as key priorities of the government.
Among the major announcements was the launch of the Kanya Ratna Scholarship for girls. The government will also continue the Vivekananda Scholarship for students securing more than 60 per cent marks.
Adhikari said the state has also introduced a separate fund of Rs 100 crore for students who wish to pursue higher studies abroad or qualify for national-level examinations.
For higher education, the government has promised financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to eligible students. The Chief Minister said the departments of Child and Women Welfare, Education and other concerned departments would work together to implement the initiatives.
The government has further decided to increase financial assistance provided to girls under the existing system. According to the announcement, the amount currently provided at Rs 1,000 will be doubled to Rs 2,000 per student from 2027.
The Chief Minister said the measures were designed to encourage more girls to continue their education and create greater opportunities in higher studies.
He also referred to the national Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative and said girls were being brought into the state’s new support framework with the objective of strengthening their role in society through education.
The government said the newly announced scholarships and financial assistance programmes would cover students pursuing higher education as well as those seeking opportunities within India and overseas.
Adhikari said the government had reviewed existing systems across departments and was working towards ensuring that the newly introduced measures deliver meaningful benefits to students and families.
