Assam Flood Relief Gets Major Centre Boost With 3.86 Lakh PMAY Houses

Centre clears major housing and farm assistance package as Assam steps up recovery from devastating floods.

New Delhi, August 26, 2026; Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held discussions with Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the national capital on Tuesday, with the meeting focusing on rehabilitation, housing and agricultural support for flood-affected people in Assam.

The Centre has cleared assistance worth around Rs 140 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) to help the state address agricultural losses caused by the floods. The approval is aimed at supporting recovery in the farming sector and meeting the additional requirement for seeds and other agricultural inputs.

A major housing package was also announced for Assam. Approval has been granted for 3,86,507 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), providing a significant boost to efforts to provide permanent shelter to eligible families.

During the meeting, Chouhan assured the Assam government that further assistance would be considered after a detailed assessment of homes damaged in the recent floods. The state has been asked to submit the findings of its survey so that additional housing support can be examined.

The Centre is also set to extend financial assistance to rural self-help group organisations. Under the proposed support, Rs 1.5 lakh will be provided to each village organisation to strengthen grassroots livelihood and recovery activities.

Sarma said the approvals reflected the Centre’s quick response to Assam’s flood situation and thanked the Union government for extending support across multiple areas. He said the state would continue the assessment process to identify families whose houses suffered damage during the latest floods.

The Assam Chief Minister also raised the issue of housing support for tea garden workers. The Union Minister assured the state of continued cooperation in taking forward the ongoing housing initiative for workers in Assam’s tea-growing communities.

The latest measures are expected to strengthen Assam’s post-flood recovery by combining housing assistance, agricultural support and financial aid for rural organisations. The state government will undertake further damage assessments to identify additional requirements.
