Delhi Govt to Step In if Onion, Sugar Prices Rise Further

New Delhi, August 26, 2026; The Delhi government has decided to take measures to keep onion and sugar prices under control if market rates witness a further increase, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said after reviewing the availability and pricing of the two essential commodities.

A review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assessed the current supply position of onions and sugar in the national capital. Officials informed the meeting that there is presently no shortage of either commodity in Delhi.

The Chief Minister directed the Food and Supplies Department to remain prepared for any disruption in supply or sudden price escalation. If onion and sugar prices rise significantly, the government will procure the commodities through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and arrange their distribution at different locations across Delhi.

Under the proposed arrangement, consumers would receive the commodities at the procurement price offered by NAFED, while the Delhi government would absorb transportation and other associated costs to prevent an additional financial burden on residents.

The department has also been instructed to closely track the movement of onion supplies entering Delhi and ensure that stocks reach retail markets without disruption. Authorities have been asked to take action against hoarding or any practices that could artificially affect availability and prices.

The Chief Minister further asked officials to work out a plan for setting up temporary camps at suitable locations where onions could be supplied to residents at affordable rates if market prices continue to climb.

Food and Supplies Minister Sardar Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the government would take necessary steps to shield consumers from any sharp rise in onion prices. He said onions procured through NAFED would be offered to the public at the applicable procurement rate, with transportation expenses being covered by the Delhi government.

The minister also said that the Centre has established quantity limits concerning the storage of sugar to discourage hoarding. Delhi authorities will enforce these provisions and initiate action if stocks are found to exceed the permitted limits.

Officials have additionally been asked to formulate measures for ensuring the availability of sugar at reasonable prices across the capital. A comprehensive action plan covering supply monitoring, affordability and enforcement measures is expected to be prepared by the department.
