Jaishankar Greets Ukraine on Independence Day, Eyes Stronger Bilateral Partnership

New Delhi, August 24, 2026; External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday conveyed India’s greetings to Ukraine on its Independence Day and highlighted New Delhi’s interest in taking bilateral relations forward.

Jaishankar extended his wishes to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the Ukrainian government and its people. He expressed confidence that India and Ukraine would continue working to expand their partnership across various areas of mutual interest.

The message comes amid sustained diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, in June, where they assessed the progress of bilateral cooperation and discussed steps to revive trade and strengthen economic relations.

During the meeting, Modi reiterated India’s support for peace and dialogue while emphasising the importance of restoring commercial ties between the two nations to their pre-war levels.

Jaishankar and Sybiha have also remained in contact on regional developments. In July, the two foreign ministers discussed the situation in the Black Sea, with Jaishankar voicing concern over attacks affecting commercial vessels and Indian seafarers. India has consistently called for diplomacy and dialogue to address the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine has also previously reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with India. On India’s Independence Day, Sybiha highlighted the importance of continued political engagement and closer cooperation between New Delhi and Kyiv, while expressing support for efforts aimed at peace and a stronger bilateral partnership.

India and Ukraine have continued diplomatic exchanges despite the challenges arising from the conflict, with both sides seeking to broaden cooperation and maintain dialogue on economic, political and international issues.
