Mumbai Family Death Mystery Deepens, No Bacterial Infection Found in Initial Report

Forensic lab report awaited after four family members died following suspected food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption in Mumbai.

Mumbai: The mysterious deaths of four members of a Mumbai family after allegedly consuming watermelon have taken a new turn, with initial medical findings ruling out any bacterial infection. Officials said the exact cause of death will only be confirmed after the final forensic science laboratory report is submitted.

The incident involved the Dokadia family, residents of Ghari Mohalla on Ismail Kurte Road. According to officials, the family had hosted relatives for a gathering on the night of April 25. Hours later, Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their two daughters reportedly ate watermelon kept at home.

Soon after, all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea during the early hours of April 26. They were first rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Mumbai’s government-run J J Hospital, where they died during treatment.

Following the deaths, teams from Mumbai Police, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and forensic experts inspected the residence. Samples of all food items consumed by the family, including chicken pulao, watermelon, water and other eatables, were collected and sent for laboratory testing.

Officials also preserved the viscera samples of the deceased for chemical examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police sources said the microbiology department of J J Hospital has now submitted a preliminary report stating that no bacterial infection was detected in the victims’ bodies. Blood samples also reportedly showed no traces of bacteria.

Investigators are now waiting for the forensic science laboratory’s detailed findings, which are expected to determine whether any toxic or poisonous substance was present in the food consumed by the family.

The case has raised concerns and speculation locally, though authorities have urged people not to jump to conclusions until the final forensic report is released.
