President Droupadi Murmu Europe Visit concluded on Sunday as she returned to New Delhi after a landmark three-nation tour of Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania, where India expanded cooperation in trade, defence, investment and strategic sectors.
The multi-country visit resulted in several high-level discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, defence, innovation, tourism and other strategic sectors. It also created new opportunities for strengthening India’s partnerships with the three European nations.
The tour carried historic importance as President Murmu became the first Indian Head of State to undertake official visits to both Moldova and North Macedonia. Her visit to Romania was equally notable, being the first by an Indian President to the country in more than three decades.
In Romania, President Murmu held separate meetings with President Nicușor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, where both sides reviewed bilateral relations and explored avenues for expanding collaboration. India and Romania also expressed their intention to substantially increase bilateral trade over the next three years while enhancing cooperation in defence, technology and other strategic sectors.
During her stay in Bucharest, the President addressed the India-Romania Business Forum, encouraging stronger commercial partnerships between businesses from both countries. She also interacted with members of the India-Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group to further strengthen parliamentary engagement.
In recognition of her contribution to public service and international cooperation, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies conferred upon President Murmu its prestigious honorary degree, Doctor Honoris Causa, the institution’s highest academic honour.
Before concluding her Romania visit, the President met members of the Indian community, appreciating their role in strengthening ties between the two countries. Romania is home to more than 13,500 Indian nationals, including nearly 10,000 workers.
Earlier, during her visit to North Macedonia, President Murmu held bilateral discussions with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova. The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, tourism, hospitality and the film industry. She also addressed the Assembly of North Macedonia and inaugurated the India-North Macedonia Business Forum.
The first leg of the visit took place in Moldova, where President Murmu met President Maia Sandu. The leaders reviewed bilateral relations and identified opportunities to expand cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, logistics, renewable energy and innovation.
The three-nation visit is being seen as a significant diplomatic initiative that has reinforced India’s engagement with Eastern Europe while opening new avenues for economic, strategic and people-to-people cooperation.
