New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu will undertake an official visit to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania from July 19 to 25, as India seeks to expand its engagement with Eastern Europe. The tour includes two landmark firsts and revives presidential-level engagement with Romania after more than 30 years.
The first leg of the visit will take President Murmu to Moldova on July 20, where she will hold discussions with President Maia Sandu and other senior leaders. This will be the first occasion on which an Indian President has visited the country, marking a significant step in advancing bilateral relations. During her stay, she is also scheduled to interact with lawmakers, participate in a business forum and meet members of the Indian diaspora.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit is expected to open new avenues for cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, information technology and education, while elevating the overall partnership between the two nations.
President Murmu will then travel to North Macedonia from July 21 to 22, becoming the first Indian Head of State to visit the country. Her programme includes meetings with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, and the Speaker of the Assembly. She will also address the country’s Parliament and attend the India-North Macedonia Business Forum.
According to the MEA, both countries are exploring stronger collaboration in science and technology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, IT and IT-enabled services, with economic engagement expected to be a major focus during the visit.
The final destination of the tour will be Romania, where President Murmu will remain from July 23 to 25. The visit marks the first by an Indian President to Romania in over three decades. She is scheduled to meet President Nicusor Dan, Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, senior parliamentary leaders and members of the Romania-India Parliamentary Friendship Group. She will also address a business forum and interact with the Indian community.
The MEA described Romania as an important partner for India within the European Union, noting that bilateral trade and investment opportunities are expected to grow further with progress on the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
The ministry said the three-nation tour underlines India’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic partnerships across Eastern Europe while expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
