International Sickle Cell Day

Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, June 19: President Droupadi Murmu attended the International Sickle Cell Day commemoration in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, and praised the country’s efforts to tackle sickle cell disease through large-scale screening and awareness programmes.

Addressing the gathering, the President described the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission as one of the world’s largest genetic disease screening initiatives.

The President expressed satisfaction that the mission achieved its screening target before the scheduled deadline.

She noted that nearly seven crore people, ranging from newborns to individuals up to 40 years of age, have been screened under the programme. According to her, the achievement reflects the government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and disease prevention.

President Murmu said that the extensive screening campaign has helped identify around 2.5 lakh people affected by sickle cell disease.

In addition, more than 20 lakh carriers of the disease have been detected across the country. She emphasized that identifying carriers is equally important as it helps authorities understand and address future health challenges related to the disorder.

The President appreciated the efforts of the Madhya Pradesh government in combating sickle cell disease.

She highlighted the success of the “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan,” under which more than four lakh women were screened between September and October 2025. She described the initiative as a significant contribution towards disease detection and prevention.

President Murmu also lauded the state’s “Sickle Mitra” programme, launched on International Sickle Cell Day last year.

The initiative trains representatives from government departments, voluntary organisations, non-government institutions, and NCC cadets to spread awareness and assist patients affected by sickle cell disease.

The President expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by the Centre, states, healthcare workers, and community volunteers would help India achieve its goal of eliminating sickle cell-related diseases before 2047.

She said continued awareness, early diagnosis, and proper treatment will play a crucial role in protecting future generations from the disease.

The International Sickle Cell Day event highlighted the importance of large-scale health screening, public participation, and timely medical intervention. The programme also showcased India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in tribal and vulnerable communities where sickle cell disease remains a major concern.
