Ashwini Vaishnaw Reviews Reforms to Empower Station Masters Across Indian Railways

New Delhi, June 19: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has reviewed a wide-ranging plan aimed at strengthening the role of Station Masters across the Indian Railways network. The initiative seeks to improve station management, enhance passenger services, and boost operational safety.

During a high-level meeting with senior railway officials, the Minister discussed the challenges faced by Station Masters and explored measures to provide them with greater authority, better resources, and improved career opportunities.

Station Masters are responsible for ensuring safe train operations, coordinating with multiple departments, and managing passenger facilities at railway stations. They also oversee station infrastructure and support services.

Officials reviewed several proposals to make Station Masters more effective in handling day-to-day operations and improving service delivery.

The Railway Ministry examined plans to grant Station Masters enhanced administrative and operational powers. The proposals are expected to help them take quicker decisions and resolve local issues more efficiently.

The meeting also focused on creating stronger career progression pathways, enabling Station Masters to move into higher management and leadership positions within Indian Railways.

To address increasing traffic and operational demands, discussions were held on deploying additional Station Masters in multi-track and high-density railway sections.

The Ministry also stressed the need to fill vacancies in the Station Master cadre on a priority basis to ensure smooth railway operations.

Indian Railways is considering the introduction of mobile app-based paperless working systems for Station Masters. Officials also reviewed plans for an integrated Station Management System that would improve coordination among departments and speed up the resolution of passenger-related issues.

These technology upgrades are expected to make station operations more efficient and responsive.

Recognising the growing complexity of railway operations, the Ministry discussed upgrading training methods through Virtual Reality (VR), simulators, and other advanced technologies.

The objective is to better prepare Station Masters for handling emergencies and modern operational challenges.

The Railway Minister also reviewed proposals to increase the financial powers of Station Masters. Greater authority at the station level is expected to help address maintenance requirements more quickly and improve passenger amenities.

Safety remained a key focus of the meeting. Officials discussed providing improved safety equipment and user-friendly tools, particularly considering the increasing participation of women Station Masters and women Pointsmen in railway operations.

The aim is to create a safer, more accessible, and efficient working environment for frontline railway employees.

The proposed reforms reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to modernising station management through better manpower support, advanced technology, improved training, and stronger decision-making powers.

The initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen safety standards, and deliver better services to millions of railway passengers across the country.
