Former MI all-rounder promoted from batting coach as the franchise looks to build on its legacy and strengthen its next generation of talent.

MUMBAI : Mumbai Indians have announced the elevation of former all-rounder Kieron Pollard to the role of head coach, extending his long-standing association with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.

Pollard, who joined Mumbai Indians as a 22-year-old, has been associated with the team for 16 years, first as a player and later as batting coach. The franchise said his experience, understanding of the team’s culture and knowledge of modern T20 cricket would provide a strong foundation for his new role.

Nita M. Ambani, co-owner of Mumbai Indians, welcomed the appointment, describing Pollard as an integral part of the franchise’s family.

“Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family,” Ambani said. She added that his passion, experience and understanding of the game had continued to benefit the team beyond his playing career.

Ambani expressed confidence that Pollard would bring the same commitment and determination to the head coach role as he had demonstrated while representing the franchise.

Reacting to his appointment, Pollard said he was honoured to take on the responsibility, describing Mumbai Indians as a significant part of his life and career.

He thanked Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the wider Mumbai Indians family for their trust, adding that he looked forward to working closely with the players and support staff to develop talent and build on the team’s legacy.

Having experienced the franchise both as a player and a coach, Pollard brings an understanding of its expectations, playing philosophy and competitive demands. His experience in T20 cricket is also expected to help the team adapt to the format’s evolving tactical and strategic challenges.

The appointment reflects Mumbai Indians’ focus on continuity, player development and maintaining its team culture as the franchise prepares for its next chapter.
