Sonam Wangchuk Continues Indefinite Fast as Political Debate Intensifies Over Ladakh Demands

Environmental activist's protest enters another day while BJP leader questions the movement's impact on development
Sonam Wangchuk Hunger Strike

New Delhi, July 15, 2026: Environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk continued his indefinite hunger strike on Wednesday, keeping the spotlight on his campaign seeking constitutional safeguards and stronger protections for Ladakh‘s environment, culture and local communities.

The ongoing protest has drawn nationwide attention, with supporters describing it as a peaceful movement to secure long-term safeguards for the Union Territory. Demonstrators have urged the Centre to address issues related to ecological conservation, employment, land rights and political representation.

As the fast continued, the protest also triggered a political exchange. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament criticised Wangchuk’s campaign, alleging that such demonstrations could delay infrastructure projects and economic development in the strategically important region. The MP argued that Ladakh’s progress depends on continued investment and faster implementation of development initiatives.

Supporters of Wangchuk rejected the criticism, maintaining that the movement is not aimed at obstructing development but at ensuring that growth takes place without harming Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem or affecting the interests of local residents.

Wangchuk has consistently called for constitutional protections that he believes would preserve Ladakh’s unique identity while balancing development with environmental sustainability. His campaign has also highlighted concerns over climate change, natural resource management and greater public participation in policymaking.

The Centre has not issued any fresh statement on the latest phase of the hunger strike. Meanwhile, civil society groups and local organisations continue to monitor the protest, with many appealing for constructive dialogue between the government and representatives of the movement.

The hunger strike has once again placed Ladakh’s governance and development model at the centre of the national conversation, with stakeholders awaiting further engagement between the government and protest leaders.
