Landslide Disrupts Goa-Karnataka Route; IMD Issues ‘Orange’ Alert

Goa, July 18, 2024 – A landslide in the Anmod Ghat area of Goa disrupted traffic on the route connecting Goa with Karnataka early Thursday morning. The landslide occurred following heavy rains in the region, impacting vehicular movement between Goa and neighboring Karnataka.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Goa, forecasting heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Both North and South Goa districts experienced significant rainfall, with Ponda taluka in South Goa recording 190 mm of rain, according to the IMD.

The landslide struck near Dudhsagar Temple at Anmod Ghat, located on Goa’s southern border with Karnataka. The incident has halted traffic to key destinations including Belgaum and Khanapur in Karnataka.

“A substantial amount of mud has blocked the road near Shree Dudhsagar Temple in the ghat area. Despite efforts by fire and emergency services to clear the debris, the road remained obstructed through the morning,” a police official reported.

Traffic through Anmod Ghat is expected to remain closed at least until the afternoon. Anmod Ghat serves as a crucial link between Goa and Karnataka, as well as Kolhapur in Maharashtra.

Following the landslide, numerous vehicles were lined up in the affected area. Police at the Mollem check post have been advising travelers about the road closure.

The route is vital for transporting essential goods such as milk and vegetables. Goa continues to experience heavy rainfall, prompting the IMD to predict scattered heavy rains with very heavy showers at isolated locations. Additionally, strong surface winds are expected across North Goa and South Goa districts.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS) has also issued a high wave warning for the North Goa coast, from Chapora to Panaji (Malim), as per the IMD’s advisory.
