Jan Aushadhi Diwas: Empowering Citizens with Quality Generic Medicines

New Delhi : Jan Aushadhi Diwas, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) and the importance of using generic medicines. The scheme, launched by the Government of India, aims to ensure that high-quality medicines are available at affordable prices, benefiting millions across the country.

The Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry has organized a week-long series of activities across the nation to support this initiative. Various awareness campaigns, health camps, and interactive sessions with medical professionals are being conducted to educate the public about the advantages of generic medicines and the significant cost reductions they offer compared to branded medicines.

PMBJP was introduced in November 2008 to provide essential medicines to the public at lower prices through a network of dedicated outlets called Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras. The scheme ensures that medicines are procured from only certified manufacturers, maintaining stringent quality checks.

These medicines are priced 50 to 80 percent lower than their branded counterparts, making healthcare more accessible, especially for economically weaker sections. The initiative not only provides an alternative to costly medicines but also significantly reduces out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare for millions of families.

A notable success under this initiative is the introduction of Suvidha Sanitary Napkins, available at just one rupee per pad. This step has empowered women, particularly in rural and economically weaker sections, ensuring better menstrual hygiene and affordability.

With over 15,000 Janaushadhi Kendras now operational in every district of India, the scheme has transformed access to quality medicines for people living in rural and remote areas. It has also played a crucial role in employment generation, offering self-employment opportunities to entrepreneurs and pharmacists. By running these kendras, individuals can establish sustainable sources of income while contributing to the nation’s healthcare sector.

The government remains committed to expanding the reach of Jan Aushadhi Kendras and increasing public trust in generic medicines.
