New Delhi, August 21, 2026; The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for staging a sit-in outside the Parliament Street police station in Delhi, accusing the Congress leader of attempting to divert public attention from the ongoing controversy surrounding Vande Mataram.
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said Gandhi’s protest was unnecessary as an FIR had already been registered over the alleged use of a pellet gun during the July 20 Jantar Mantar protest. He questioned the decision to hold a demonstration at the police station despite the matter being under investigation.
Prasad said the authorities had informed Gandhi about the FIR and pointed out that a high-powered committee constituted by the Supreme Court was examining the incident. He urged the Congress leader to respect the ongoing legal process.
The BJP leader further alleged that the Congress was using the protest to shift the political debate away from the Vande Mataram controversy. He criticised the party’s position on the national song and accused it of creating a fresh political issue to regain public attention.
Gandhi was joined by Congress workers and Sahil Lochab, who has been identified as the person allegedly affected by pellet gun use during the Jantar Mantar demonstration. The protest was organised over the handling of the incident and the subsequent police action.
Union Minister JP Nadda also targeted Gandhi over the demonstration, accusing him of resorting to what he described as attention-seeking politics outside the police station.
The BJP’s criticism comes amid heightened political exchanges between the ruling party and Congress over both the Jantar Mantar incident and the wider debate surrounding Vande Mataram.
