Thimphu, August 21, 2026; India and Bhutan are exploring new avenues to expand cooperation in healthcare, with an Indian medical value travel delegation holding discussions with Bhutanese officials, hospitals and tourism-sector stakeholders on specialised treatment and healthcare capacity building.
The delegation visited Bhutan on August 19 and 20 as part of an initiative facilitated by the Embassy of India in Bhutan and coordinated by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The meetings focused on identifying areas where Indian expertise and healthcare services could support Bhutan’s medical requirements.
Discussions covered the scope for providing specialised and high-quality medical services, strengthening healthcare delivery and developing institutional capacity through greater cooperation between the two countries.
A key interaction brought together senior representatives from Bhutan’s health sector, including Ministry of Health Secretary Dasho Pema Wangchuk, President of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital and Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan Pem Namgyal, along with the Indian Ambassador.
The latest healthcare engagement comes amid broader efforts by New Delhi and Thimphu to deepen their longstanding bilateral partnership.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently travelled to Bhutan and met Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay to review cooperation between the two countries. The discussions covered India’s development support and the progress of bilateral relations across several areas.
Misri also met Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and briefed him on developments concerning joint development initiatives. The two sides also reviewed cooperation in sectors including energy, trade, investment, connectivity and development partnerships, besides discussing people-to-people relations and regional matters.
The healthcare discussions are expected to add another dimension to India-Bhutan cooperation, particularly in specialised medical treatment, medical travel and professional capacity development.
