Sunil Chhetri Makes Comeback to Indian Squad for FIFA Window Matches

New Delhi : All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced that Sunil Chhetri, India’s most celebrated footballer, will make his return to the national squad for the FIFA International Window matches against the Maldives and Bangladesh this month. This marks a surprising comeback for the former Indian captain, who had previously retired from international football after playing his final match against Kuwait in June last year.

Chhetri’s return comes at a crucial juncture for the Indian team, which is preparing for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers Third Round. His leadership, experience, and goal-scoring prowess are expected to provide a significant boost to the squad as they aim to strengthen their campaign.

Sunil Chhetri, who has long been regarded as the backbone of Indian football, announced his retirement from international duty after an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades. With over 140 caps and more than 90 international goals, he remains India’s all-time leading goal scorer. His contributions to Indian football have been monumental, and his decision to step away last year left a void that was difficult to fill.

However, the 39-year-old forward has now decided to lace up his boots once again for the national team. AIFF officials, coaching staff, and fans alike have welcomed this decision, as India looks to capitalize on his experience to build momentum ahead of crucial tournaments.

India will first take on the Maldives in a friendly match on March 19 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong. This game will serve as a warm-up fixture before the team shifts its focus to the much-anticipated FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, where they will face Bangladesh at the same venue.

Both matches are expected to be challenging, as India aims to fine-tune its tactics and solidify its playing style under head coach Igor Štimac. The return of Chhetri will not only strengthen the attack but also inspire young players in the squad. Chhetri’s return has already ignited excitement among football fans in India, many of whom were disappointed when he retired last year. His presence on the field is expected to draw large crowds to the stadium and increase the viewership of India’s matches.
