Amstelveen, August 23, 2026; India’s men’s hockey team will have its back against the wall when it takes on Argentina in the final Pool E match of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 on Monday, with a place in the semifinals still within reach but dependent on a strong result.
India’s 1-3 loss to hosts and defending champions Netherlands has left the team without a point in the second stage. Argentina, meanwhile, boosted its qualification chances by defeating England 3-1, leaving all three teams — Argentina, England and India — battling for the remaining semifinal opportunity behind the Netherlands.
The equation is straightforward but demanding for India: they must beat Argentina and then hope the result of the Netherlands-England match goes in their favour. Goal difference could become the deciding factor if the teams finish level on points.
A three-goal win would give India a major boost in the standings, while England would need to lose to the Netherlands by at least two goals for India to move ahead of both Argentina and England on goal difference. A four-goal victory for India would provide another route, as any England defeat would then be enough to keep the Indian side in contention.
However, an England draw would take them to four points, making it impossible for India to overtake them with a victory over Argentina alone.
India’s attacking performance will be crucial after the team struggled to consistently score from open play in its previous matches. Captain Harmanpreet Singh has been one of the side’s biggest threats, with six goals to his name, putting him level with Argentina’s Tomas Domene among the tournament’s leading scorers.
Among India’s forwards, Abhishek has contributed two goals while Dilpreet Singh has scored once. The team will need greater attacking efficiency and more goals from open play against Argentina.
Chief Coach Craig Fulton said the team understands what is required to keep its semifinal hopes alive while stressing the importance of maintaining its tactical discipline.
India will therefore enter the contest knowing that there is almost no margin for error. A victory is essential, but the size of that win and the outcome of the Netherlands-England encounter could ultimately determine whether India advances to the last four.
