New Delhi, July 25 2024 : Approximately 6,700 Indian students have safely returned from Bangladesh amidst ongoing violent anti-quota protests, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has been instrumental in facilitating their return.
During a weekly briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “So far, 6,700 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh.” He also expressed optimism that the situation in Bangladesh would stabilize soon.
The Indian government has received significant cooperation from Bangladeshi authorities. “Our High Commission has arranged for the safe and secure travel of Indian nationals to the border crossing points or to the airports, as required,” Jaiswal noted.
The High Commission and the Assistant High Commissions in Bangladesh have been operating 24×7 helplines, providing necessary assistance to students and Indian nationals. “All our people there can reach out to them, and they have been rendering whatever assistance has been requested,” the spokesperson added.
India views the anti-quota protests in Bangladesh, which have resulted in widespread violence and several deaths, as an internal matter of Bangladesh. However, the MEA remains hopeful that the close and friendly ties between the two nations will contribute to a swift resolution of the unrest.
