Paris Olympics 2024: Ankita Bhakat Leads India’s Archery Team to Quarter-Finals

Indian Archers Start Strong Ahead of Official Opening Ceremony

Paris, July 25 2024 : As the world awaits the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 26, Indian archers have already begun their quest for glory. Led by Ankita Bhakat, the Indian women’s archery team has directly qualified for the quarter-finals, making a strong start to their campaign.

Ankita Bhakat delivered an impressive performance, achieving her season-best score of 666 points to secure the 11th position in the archery rankings. Her teammates, Bhajan Kaur and Deepika Kumari, also put in solid performances, finishing 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Korea’s Sihyeon Lim set a new world record with a score of 694.

The archery events kicked off today, even before the official opening of the Games, with a focus on securing favorable seeding positions. This strategic move is crucial as it significantly affects the archers’ chances of advancing through the knockout stages. The Indian team aims to maintain their momentum and set a positive tone for the rest of the competition.

All six Indian archers are competing for advantageous seeding. This marks the first time since the 2012 London Olympics that India has secured all six quota places in archery, fueling hopes for an Olympic medal in the sport.

The archery events at the Paris Games began today and will continue until August 4. The women’s ranking round took place at 1 PM IST, featuring Indian archers Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and Bhajan Kaur. The men’s individual ranking round is set to begin at 5 PM IST, with Tarundeep Rai, Pravin Jadhav, and Dhiraj Bommadevara representing India.
