JLN Stadium Hosts Cycling Event on World Bicycle Day 2026 Promoting Green Lifestyle

New Delhi, June 3: Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday marked World Bicycle Day 2026 with a symbolic cycling event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, promoting fitness, sustainability and environmental awareness.

The Minister cycled along with around 30 officials and staff members from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), completing a lap of the stadium as part of the commemorative activity.

Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports Raksha Khadse also attended the event and participated in the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mandaviya highlighted cycling as a simple yet powerful habit that supports both health and environmental protection. He said cycling is not merely a recreational activity but a lifestyle choice that contributes to a “Fit, Healthy and Viksit Bharat.”

He stressed that regular cycling can help reduce air pollution, lower dependence on fossil fuels, and promote a more sustainable mode of transport, aligning with India’s broader climate and public health goals.

The 2026 theme of World Bicycle Day, “Cycling for a Greener Future,” emphasises the role of bicycles in reducing carbon emissions and encouraging eco-friendly mobility. The initiative also aligns with the government’s ongoing Fit India Movement and the expanding “Fit India Sundays on Cycle” campaign.

The Minister further noted that citizens, especially youth, should adopt cycling as a daily habit and actively participate in upcoming nationwide fitness initiatives. A special edition of “Sundays on Cycle” is scheduled for June 7 across the country to mark the occasion on a larger scale, bringing together cyclists, students, athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

The Ministry also highlighted that India is preparing to host the World Yogasana Sport Championship 2026 in Ahmedabad from June 4 to 8, with participation from over 500 athletes representing more than 70 countries. The event is expected to strengthen India’s global position in promoting fitness-oriented sports and traditional disciplines.

Officials said both initiatives reflect the government’s continued focus on promoting physical fitness, environmental responsibility and youth participation in nation-building activities.
