New Delhi, July 18, 2026;
Sir Garfield Sobers is being remembered across the cricketing world following the legendary West Indies all-rounder’s passing, with Indian batting star Virat Kohli leading heartfelt tributes to one of the sport’s greatest icons.
Sharing his message on social media, Kohli described Sobers as one of cricket’s finest icons and said his extraordinary achievements and influence would continue to inspire future generations. His tribute reflected the immense respect the former West Indies captain commanded across the global cricket community.
Sir Garfield Sobers enjoyed a remarkable international career spanning two decades, representing the West Indies in 93 Test matches from 1954 to 1974. During that period, he amassed more than 8,000 Test runs at an exceptional average while also taking over 200 wickets, establishing himself as one of the most complete cricketers the game has ever seen.
Renowned for his versatility, Sobers excelled as a left-handed batter, a multi-skilled left-arm bowler capable of pace and spin, and an outstanding fielder. His all-round brilliance made him a benchmark for generations of cricketers.
One of the defining moments of his career came in 1958 when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, setting a new world record for the highest individual score in Test cricket. The landmark innings remained the highest Test score for more than three decades.
Sobers also created history in county cricket in 1968 by becoming the first player to strike six consecutive sixes in a single over during a first-class match, a feat that remains one of cricket’s most iconic achievements.
In recognition of his exceptional contribution to the sport, he was awarded a knighthood in 1975. His stature in world cricket was further cemented when he was named among Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the 20th Century. The International Cricket Council also honours his legacy through the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, presented annually to the world’s best men’s international cricketer.
With the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, cricket bids farewell to one of its greatest ambassadors, whose achievements and influence will continue to shape the sport for generations to come.
