New Delhi, October 28, 2025 — A video featuring Delhi Public Works Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh during Chhath Puja celebrations at his residence has triggered a wave of criticism on social media platforms. The clip, shared by ANI, shows a woman prostrating at a temporary ghat while the minister is seen showering her with flower petals.
The video quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), with many users condemning the act as disrespectful toward women and contrary to the egalitarian spirit traditionally associated with Chhath Puja — a festival deeply rooted in the culture of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi’s migrant communities.
Critics accused the minister of engaging in “symbolic theatrics” for political visibility amid ongoing debates over the management and preparation of Yamuna River ghats for the festival. Some opposition leaders and social commentators described the act as “regressive” and “misaligned with the festival’s essence of equality and devotion.”
Meanwhile, supporters of Parvesh Sahib Singh defended the video, saying it captured a personal religious ceremony conducted in his home premises. They argued that the act was a customary gesture of respect and not intended to demean anyone, pointing out that individual devotional expressions often vary across regions and communities.
Celebrated over four days, Chhath Puja is a significant festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, symbolizing gratitude, purity, and equality. Traditionally observed along riverbanks, devotees—mostly women—offer prayers while standing in water, making it one of India’s most inclusive and gender-balanced festivals.
The controversy highlights the fine line between personal faith and public perception, especially when political figures participate in deeply cultural rituals. As the Delhi government continues preparations for safe and clean ghats along the Yamuna, the incident has once again opened discussions on gender respect, religious representation, and political symbolism during festivals.
