Parliament Proceedings Disrupted as Opposition Protests Over Student Demonstration Crackdown

New Delhi, July 27:
Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were suspended until 12 noon on Monday after repeated protests by Opposition members over the alleged police action against students during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo‘ demonstration linked to the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy.

The disruptions began immediately after the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha assembled for the day. Opposition MPs raised slogans and pressed for an immediate discussion on the issue, leading to continuous interruptions that prevented normal business from being conducted. As the protests intensified, the presiding officers adjourned both Houses until noon.

Before the Lok Sabha was adjourned, Speaker Om Birla congratulated Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for winning the country’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in the women’s 48 kg category, drawing applause from members present in the House.

Outside Parliament, leaders and MPs from several Opposition parties continued their protest, reiterating their demand for accountability over the handling of the July 20 student demonstration. According to sources, the Opposition has decided to maintain pressure on the government and has sought a detailed discussion on the matter in Parliament.

To raise the issue formally, Opposition members submitted adjournment motions in the Lok Sabha and notices seeking suspension of business in the Rajya Sabha. They have demanded an urgent debate on the alleged use of force by security personnel during the protest march organised over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak issue.

The political confrontation follows remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the incident. In a letter shared publicly, Gandhi sought clarification on whether the use of force against protesters had official approval and called for transparency regarding the deployment of security personnel during the demonstration. He also alleged that several protesters, including women students and a journalist, sustained injuries during the incident.

The July 20 protest began with a march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament, where demonstrators were demanding action over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. During the march, clashes were reported between protesters and security forces, with allegations of lathi-charge and the use of tear gas emerging from the scene.
