India Shines at International Olympiads 2026 with Record 12 Gold Medals

New Delhi, July 22, 2026;

India’s young science and mathematics talents scripted a remarkable success story at the International Olympiads 2026 by securing 12 gold and seven silver medals across Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, marking one of the country’s best-ever performances in these prestigious global competitions.

The outstanding results included a historic clean sweep in both the International Physics Olympiad and the International Chemistry Olympiad, where every Indian participant returned home with a gold medal. The achievement highlights India’s growing strength in nurturing world-class scientific talent at the school level.

The National Olympiad Programme, coordinated by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), functions under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) with institutional support from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). Through a rigorous multi-stage selection and training process, the programme identifies exceptional students from across the country and prepares them for international competitions.

According to the overall results, India won all five gold medals at the International Physics Olympiad, earning a joint world No. 1 ranking. At the International Chemistry Olympiad, all four Indian contestants also secured gold medals, placing the country jointly at the top globally. The Biology Olympiad saw India collect one gold and three silver medals, while the Mathematics Olympiad concluded with two gold and four silver medals.

Department of Atomic Energy Secretary and Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty congratulated the medal winners, describing their success as a proud moment for the nation. He said the achievements reflect the determination of the students, the commitment of teachers and mentors, and the robust scientific ecosystem developed over several decades to support young talent.

HBCSE Centre Director Prof. Arnab Bhattacharya credited the consistent support of the Department of Atomic Energy for strengthening India’s Olympiad programme. He said the institution remains focused on discovering gifted students, providing advanced scientific training and encouraging excellence in science and mathematics across the country.

For nearly four decades, the Department of Atomic Energy has played a key role in building India’s Olympiad ecosystem by supporting HBCSE and collaborating with scientists, educators and academic institutions nationwide. The programme has produced numerous students who have later excelled in higher education, scientific research and innovation both in India and abroad.

The Department of Atomic Energy also acknowledged the contribution of mentors, scientific observers, teachers and resource persons who worked closely with the students throughout the training process. It further recognised the continued support of the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Space and the Ministry of Education in strengthening the National Olympiad Programme.

The record medal haul at the International Olympiads 2026 reinforces India’s commitment to scientific education and demonstrates the growing capabilities of its young scholars on the global stage, reflecting the country’s long-term investment in research, innovation and academic excellence.
